High School Sailing - 8th grade through 12th grade
Race for your school. High school sailing is coming back to Santa Cruz County. You don't need experience, and you don't need an existing team - you just need to want to give it a try.
How it works
In the Bay Area, high school sailing is sailed in FJs - two-person boats where crews rotate positions, so you learn to both skipper and crew. You'll train with us through the season and represent your school at regattas around the Bay.
No prior experience is required. What matters is that you're comfortable in the water and ready to learn.
New to it? Try it first.
Not sure if sailing is for you? You don't have to commit to a full season to find out. Your first three practices are $65 each - no Scholastic registration and no membership required. Come sail on a Saturday or drop in during the week, get a real feel for it, and decide from there.
It's the one way to sail with us without registering first. And if you decide to join, the $65 you've already paid counts toward your Scholastic registration — so trying it costs you nothing extra in the end.
Starting a team at your school
You don't need an existing team to start. If your school doesn't have one yet - or you're not sure - reach out, and we'll help you figure out how to get going. Some of the best teams start with one or two curious sailors.
What it costs
High School sailing is part of the Scholastic program. To take part, sailors need to be registered for Scholastic and have a current Junior Membership — that's the one registration that covers all Scholastic sailing. See Scholastic for details.
The only added costs for high school sailors:
- Weekday drop-in practices: $25 each - extra time on the water to train with your team
- School team fee: $300 per school year, per participating school team
Scholarship note: Any junior who wishes to sail and is admitted to a sailing program should not be limited by financial resources. Full and/or partial scholarships may be available with the support from the The Santa Cruz Sailing Foundation. For more information, reach out to juniordirector@scyc.org.
