Club Sailing im Scholastic Program - the foundation

Club Sailing is where every teenage sailor at SCYC begins. Whether you want to race for your school, join our Racing Team, or simply learn to sail a double-handed boat well, this is the starting point — and for many sailors, it's all they need.Diagram showing Club Sailing as the foundation for all scholastic sailors, with three optional paths: High School Sailing, Racing Team, and Advanced Sailing.

What you'll learn

Club Sailing is sailed in FJs and C420s - two-person boats. You'll learn to handle a boat as both skipper and crew: steering, sail trim, tacking, jibing, and the boat-handling that everything else in the program builds on. No previous experience is required.

The Saturday session

Saturday afternoon is the heart of Club Sailing — and the one time each week the whole scholastic group is on the water together. Club sailors, high school racers, the Racing Team, and Advanced sailors all train side by side. It's a great atmosphere, and it's where sailors of every level push each other to improve.

Registration for the session is required to take part.

Friday Night Races

During the school year, our sailors can take part in the Friday Night Races — a low-key, local introduction to racing, held right here in Santa Cruz. It's a relaxed way to get a first taste of competition without traveling to a regatta, and it often finishes with a BBQ back at the club.

Like all regattas, there's a small entry fee.

Where it leads

Club Sailing is the doorway to the rest of the program:

  • High School Sailing - race for your school
  • Racing Team - compete around the Bay and beyond (by invitation)
  • Advanced Sailing - high-performance sailing in 29ers, C420s, and 470s (by invitation)

You don't have to decide any of that now. Start with Club Sailing, find your feet, and grow from there.

What it costs

  • $390 per session - covers your weekly Saturday class for the full session
  • $75 annual Junior Membership

This one registration makes you part of the whole Scholastic program. Optional add-ons, once you're registered:

  • Weekday drop-in practices: $25 each
  • Advanced Sailing: $40 each (by invitation)
  • Racing Team: one-time $150 (by invitation)

Scholarship note: Any junior who wishes to sail and is admitted to a sailing program should not be limited by financial resources. Full and/or partial scholarships may be available with the support from the The Santa Cruz Sailing Foundation. For more information, reach out to juniordirector@scyc.org.
